ROYAL CANIN SOUTH AFRICA ANNOUNCES REASONS FOR PET FOOD CONTAMINATION

Johannesburg, Thursday April 19, 2007

As a follow up to previous communications, Royal Canin South Africa announces:

We at Royal Canin want to express our support and condolences for pet owners whose pets may have fallen ill or passed away as a result of eating our food. As animal health professionals and pet owners ourselves, we know this situation causes suffering for pets and concern for pet owners and our customers as it has for our entire Royal Canin team.

Results of the tests have confirmed that Vets Choice and Royal Canin dog and cat dry pet food products contained corn gluten contaminated with melamine. The contaminated corn gluten was delivered to Royal Canin by a South African third party supplier and appears to have originated from China.

Those products subject to the current recall were manufactured by Royal Canin South Africa in its Johannesburg plant between March 08, 2007 and April 11, 2007 and were sold exclusively in South Africa and Namibia.

All other Vets Choice and Royal Canin products (including products made in South Africa before March 8 2007 and products made outside South Africa) are not affected and can be safely fed to the pets.

Sales of all Vets Choice products were suspended on 11 April 2007 and all affected products are currently being recalled from the market. All the necessary measures have been taken in full coordination with the South African Veterinary Association (SAVA) and the Pet Food Institute (PFI) to ensure this contamination does not happen again.

Managing Director, Gregory Watine says: “We will continue to cooperate totally with the relevant Public Authorities, PFI, SAVA , customers and pet owners to help them by all means possible and be assured that Royal Canin remains committed to putting the interests of pets and their health and nutrition first.”
